Woman Explains What It’s Like To Find Out The Reason Her Mother Never Came Home Was Because She Died

Barbara Bracht Donsky has only one memory of her mother—dreamlike images from a child who didn’t know that the most important person in her life was about to vanish forever.

Barbara now believes that memory was from the last day of her mother’s life. At the time, Barbara was three years old and their family lived in the Bronx, New York.

“I was riding my tricycle around the house, and when I got into the bedroom, a wheel caught on her bedspread and I fell,” she told New York Magazine. “She pulled me up onto the bed. That’s my last, or my only, memory of her. She was not feeling well. I can recall the sun beaming in through the windows. The radio was on. And then she just disappeared.”

It would be years before Barbara knew the truth. Though she had a tiny new brother, no one told the young girl what had actually happened.
